Evaluation: Question 1

Question One:
In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

What influenced me while filming my music video was the Artist we used Pixie Lott and her video to the song "Use Somebody' as well as Destiny Child's Video 'Emotion' and Trey Songz song "One Love'.

We used two ideas out of the three videos, in the Pixie Lott video we used the black and white colour scheme which reflected the memories the two friends once shared and by also using a studio it closely connected both videos. In the 'Emotions' video we got the idea of the friendship instead of using the story line most used of relationship between lovers. Going back to the Pixie Lott video of 'Use Somebody' there are many close ups which we also used to show the artist more and to let the audience know that she is apart of what is happening in the video. Also close ups are important because it creates a relationship between the artist and audience and the close up is the main shot as it is used in chorus throughout the video.

Editing, using the camera and trying to get my vision and make it into a well produced music video was a lot of hard work as we had to consider lighting, matching up the track to the video and the over all look and  effects. The part i enjoyed most was the camera work because i got to get really involved and while shooting we came up with different ideas to make the video better and most of the filming was randomly shot to catch everyone in the natural surroundings enjoying themselves. But there were obstacles we had to face because the studio we used had limited space which made it hard to position the camera and tripod. Also we filmed on two different days and in one she has ear phones and the lighting was dark whereas on the other time the lighting was good and the artist wasn't wearing ear phones.

I believe that the video me and my group done keep to the conventions if the genre. Our genre is pop and in many pop videos there is a lot of narrative which can also be seen in other genres such a R&B and some Indie/Rock videos. Other reasons to why i believe we kept to the conventions is the locations we chose as they were very contemporary. Reasons to why i didn't want to challenge the conventions is because i wanted to keep the video simple as the song is self explanatory and doesn't have much going on. In many pop videos they mainly focus on the artist to create a relationship between the audience and artist.

My digipak and advertisement both fits in with my genre because of the colours chosen and the text on the advert is soft and feminine which suits and female pop star and there younger audience, and on the other hand suits a more sophisticated audience. I did decide to challenge the conventions when it came to my digipak because of the colours i used. The colour black isn't usually used in a pop digipak cover unless its for the writing and by me using the picture of the rose i used in the video which was done to connect the video to the digipak looks a bit Gothic which could make people think the genre might be indie pop. And the colour cream suits a more older audience which may show the artist as versatile. Where as my advertisement suit a younger audience because the use of the baby pink background.

I have incorporated a close up of the artists face in all three media products , so they are easily recognised as well as the artist.

                                       Here black text is used,but the over all cover looks feminine and suits the pop genre.

The use of the colour pink shows innocence and give the whole pop princess feel to it like my advertisement.

  1. Hi Bridie,

    Some good image examples to support your points but you need to look at the evaluation handout and check that you have covered all the points in the What should you cover section.

  2. Hi Bridie
    A couple of points from me too (Rebecca):
    You are talking about 'what you did' and obstacles that you came across - this isn't required in this question.
    You don't really refer to conventions of music videos - you are making some quite vague points about conventions that aren't really associated with the music video genre. Landscapes for example - that's not a convention really. You must be specific about this - look back on your notes on the conventions of music videos (e.g. always cuts to the beat; repetition of close ups of the main star; verse-chorus-verse structure, etc etc) and find examples from your video to fit them;
    Lastly - please proof read! too many spelling errors....
    this can be brilliant - it just needs a little more time spent on it.
