Evaluation Question 1

Question 1: In which ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The first thing we did as a group was come up with a song. We decided on Pixie Lotts' cover version of Kings Of Leon's- Use Somebody. We listened to the lyrics of the song and this helped us to come up with a concept for our video. We also looked at Pixie Lott's video of the song. The video is just of her in the studio while she actually sings the song, the video is shot in black and white. It is also filmed on hand held camera. There are lots of closes up to emphasise the emotion on her face as she sings and this goes well the the song. There are also a lot of slow moving panning shots which also portray the emotion and allow you to not be distracted by what is going in the video and concentrate on the song itself. This video was a very big influence on our video because we felt that it was so typical of the genre of the song. After some discussion we decided that just watching Marilyn in the studio for 3 minutes would be boring so we decided to add some narrative to it. We first decided to have our video go from Marilyn in the studio to her in her everyday life and 2 of her friends in a 3 way split screen. We got this idea from Destiny's Child's Emotion video. After some discussion we found out that this would be a bit difficult so we went back to keeping it simple and we thought we would show the relationship between the artist and her best friend who would die in the video.

I decided to not choose the same photo for my CD and my advert because i felt that consumers would want something different but included a photo of the actual CD in the advert so that they would be able to recognise it.
We decided to stick to the conventions of our genre because we felt that it wouldn't make sense to have  our artist all dressed up in flashy clothes and and flashy location because it doesn't relate to the song. We did however choose not to show the typical relationship between a male and a female because it was all too typical and we wanted to do something a little bit different and show the relationship between 2 best friends.

The picture is of Adele's new album called 21. Her genre of music relates to the music that we used in our groups video. The album cover is very simple which put the focus of the artist and the music. Also her video for her song chasing pavements is very typical of the pop genre which she represents and a ballad, its very simplistic and mellow and doesn't involve any flashy dance sequences or her dressed head to toe in designer clothes.

Cheryl Cole is the complete opposite of Adele and my artist as who follow the typical conventions of pop music by portraying her as a 'sex symbol'. Her album cover and her video emphasise this. Her album cover focuses of her wearing a nice dress and designer Louboutins she is also wearing lots of make up as opposed to Adele who's make up is more naturalistic. Also her video for fight for this love involve her being in the spotlight in almost every shot. Even when she isn't alone in the shot she is made to stand out

My video doesn't challenge the conventions as it is quite typical of a ballad, you would usually expect to see studio shots and also a narrative. The video which i created focuses on typical conventions such as lip synching, repetition of shots especially close ups which are usually seen in pop music especially with ballads.

You will need to spend more time identifying what the conventions of the genre within you worked are in order to then discuss how you followed them or challenged them. There is very little discussion around conventions at all. Look back at some of your earlier blogs where you analysed music videos. Conventions may include: cutting to the beat; lip synching; repetition of close-up; verse-chorus-verse structure, etc etc.
Don't refer to negatives - you can't you couldn't upload your ancillary work - but you screen shot it (which is actually how you up load it!).
Keep up the good work - this can be much better.
